To a thick water slurry made of a certain amount of pigment/pigment mixture, gradually drop a thicker pigment dispersant solution under stirring, and measure the viscosity every time it is added. As the dosage-viscosity curve of pigment dispersant, the lowest point is the optimal dosage of dispersant. This method is suitable for the water slurry itself. In latex paint, there is often insufficient dispersant, and more (up to double) must be added in practical applications.
(3) Determination of the amount of carbon black dispersant by concentration/flocculation method
Use a certain amount of pigment/pigment mixture to make a thick water slurry, add the pigment dispersant solution one by one, and mix well until it can completely flow from the scraper. Drop 1 mL of ionic thickener on a glass plate lined with a black background, plus a drop of dispersed pigment paste. Then gently mix well. If flocculation occurs, add pigment dispersant to the pigment slurry until no flocculation occurs, and calculate the amount of pigment dispersant at this point according to the pigment, which is called C-A value (concentration-flocculation value).
