Carbon black has a variety of indicators, which are mainly related to the use of carbon black. The following editor will introduce the meaning of indicators for pigment carbon black. What indicators should you know when purchasing?

The indicators of pigment carbon black include particle size, specific surface area, DBP oil absorption value, tinting strength, volatile matter, pH value, hue, heat loss, density, blackness and other indicators.

  1. Particle size: It represents the primary particle size of carbon black, which is the average value of a certain number of particle sizes, and has nothing to do with the state of carbon black, that is, whether carbon black is in granular or powder form, it has no effect on the particle size of carbon black. Pigment carbon black can be divided into high pigment carbon black, medium pigment carbon black and low pigment carbon black according to the particle size.

  2. Specific surface area: It represents the surface area per gram of carbon black, which can be measured by low-temperature nitrogen adsorption or iodine adsorption, and the unit is m2/g.

  3. DBP oil absorption value: refers to the adsorption of carbon black with dibutyl phthalate. Related to the structure size of carbon black, the higher the DBP value, the higher the structure of carbon black.

  4. Tinting strength: It can also be called tinting strength. It is one of the important indicators of pigment carbon black, indicating the dyeing ability of carbon black. Generally speaking, the higher the tinting strength of carbon black, the stronger the covering performance.

  5. Volatile content: refers to the content of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of carbon black, which represents the chemical properties of the surface of carbon black and is related to the pH value.

  6. PH value: Indicates the acidity and alkalinity of carbon black. Generally, furnace carbon black is alkaline. After treatment, the PH value can be reduced and the volatile content can be increased.

  7. Hue: The hue of pigment carbon black is blue phase and yellow phase, which can adjust the color of the product, which is an important indicator of high-end pigment carbon black.

  8. Heating loss: It represents the moisture content of carbon black at a certain temperature.

  9. Density: refers to the weight of carbon black per unit volume, in g/L.

  10. Blackness: An important indicator of the particle size of reactive pigment carbon black, which is related to the market price of carbon black.
