Although carbon black is not considered a hazardous material, it still has some dangers that require attention. The dangers of carbon black and corresponding safety measures will be analyzed in detail below.

  1. Hazard categories of carbon black

According to relevant information, carbon black is not classified as a hazardous material. Usually, dangerous goods will be clearly marked with flammable, explosive, toxic and other properties on the label, and will be accompanied by corresponding pictorial symbols, such as torches indicating flammable, explosion patterns indicating explosive, and skulls indicating poisonous.

  2. The harm of carbon black to human health

Carbon black mainly affects human health through three pathways: respiratory inhalation, eye and skin contact.

Respiratory Inhalation: Long-term inhalation of carbon black dust in large amounts may cause damage to the lungs. Although there are no definite medical reports confirming that carbon black can cause cancer, it may still be classified as a potential carcinogen.

Eye contact: Carbon black may cause symptoms such as foreign body sensation and tearing in the eyes.

Skin Contact: Carbon black can cause skin staining and irritation.

It should be pointed out that those who have worked in carbon black factories for a long time may have heard that carbon black may cause cancer, but it is clear that long-term exposure to carbon black does not cause cancer. However, carbon black can still cause a certain degree of harm to human health, so when exposed to carbon black, appropriate personal protective measures should be taken.

  3. The harm of carbon black to the environment

Exposure to carbon black leaks may cause the surrounding environment to become dirty, but no serious impact or damage to the environment has been found. However, in the carbon black production process, the wet granulation process may cause certain harm to water resources.

  4. Regarding the dangers of carbon black explosion

If a pure carbon black dust environment forms in the carbon black workplace, a dust explosion may occur. However, the conditions for dust explosion are quite stringent, and even if such an environment is created, explosion standards may not be met.

In general, carbon black is not flammable and generally does not burn easily. Even if it is kept above 300℃ for a long time, it will only burn slowly and release carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide or a small amount of nitrogen and sulfur oxides.

To sum up, carbon black is not classified as a dangerous goods or dangerous chemical, but its leakage is polluting and difficult to clean up, so some shipping companies may avoid transporting carbon black. It needs to be emphasized that although carbon black is not a dangerous product, corresponding protective measures still need to be taken when coming into contact with carbon black to ensure work safety.
